Workshop 1: Maintaining Financial Stability with Widening Financial Inclusion: The Case of African States Workshop

Description: The workshop aims to bring together central bankers and to provide a venue to discuss and share experiences regarding the African countries on "Financial Stability" and "Financial Inclusion". In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, maintaining financial stability has become a key concern for central banks. At the same time, the importance of financial inclusion, especially in developing countries, has recently gained more attention. The co-existence of financial inclusion and financial stability creates a question for debate since there is no consensus on whether financial inclusion brings financial stability or instability. The agenda of the workshop will include, reviewing the recent developments on financial inclusion in theregion and discussing the necessary measures for maintaining financial stability while having higher usage of financial services.

Target Audience: This workshop is designed for officials and economists from central banks and related policy institutions who are interested in financial stability and financial inclusion. Participants will be expected to take part in the discussions and share their country experiences.

 

Workshop 2: Islamic Banking and Liquidity Management Workshop

Description: The workshop, which is jointly organized with the World Bank Global Islamic Finance Development Center and the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), aims to provide a platform for the participants from central banks and other policy institutions to discuss and share respective country experiences on the development of Islamic banking, Islamic financial markets, instruments and liquidity management. Islamic finance has recently gained more attention and is increasingly becoming an integral part of the global financial system. Therefore, taking into consideration issues regarding Islamic finance services has become more crucial for sustaining the financial stability. The development of regulatory framework and the well-established mechanism for the efficient liquidity operations are among the major challenges for the financial institutions providing Islamic finance services. The agenda of the workshop will include

  • Core principles of Islamic economics and finance
  • Islamic banking, capital markets and regulatory framework
  • Repo and liquidity standards and implications of Basel III on liquidity
  • Current practices and country experiences

Target Audience: This workshop is designed for officials and economists from central banks and related policy institutions who are interested in Islamic banking and liquidity management of Islamic financial services industry. Participants will be expected to take part in the discussions and share their country experiences.
